Description


The primary function of a Police Sergeant is to provide supervisory and enforcement skills in the commissioned law enforcement services of the Tyler Junior College District.

Scope
Responsible for supervising police personnel engaged in law enforcement duties associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of the Tyler Junior College District.  Exercises independent judgment within limits prescribed by law, Policies, and Procedures of the Board of Trustees, institutional rules and regulations, and Chief of Police departmental policies and procedures.  Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Received
Performance is reviewed by supervising officers, Lieutenant or Chief of Police, through reports and observation.

Given

Close and frequent supervision of commissioned police officers, public safety officers, telecommunication officers, and other civilian personnel assigned to one’s shift or duty assignment.


Essential Functions and Duties


  • To perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of the Tyler Junior College District
  • Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime
  • Execute all lawful processes
  • Arrest offenders with and without a warrant when authorized by law
  • Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, and recover stolen or lost property
  • Attempt to locate missing persons
  • Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody, or issuing citations or warnings
  • Investigate motor vehicle collisions
  • Prepare various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities
  • Give testimony in the criminal courts of this state and the United States
  • Confers with prosecuting attorneys preserves evidence and maintains confidential information
  • Confers with local law enforcement, criminal justice, and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest


Qualifications


Required Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
Required Licensure/Certification
  • Peace Officer License Issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement      
Other Requirements
  • Must hold a Peace Officer Commission, issued by the Chief of Police of the Tyler Junior College Police Department, and a valid driver’s license not subject to suspension
  • Must be eligible to drive an institution-owned or leased motor vehicle
  • Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Chief of Police, the Board of Trustees, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education
  • Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer of the Tyler Junior College Police Department
  • Knowledge and skills in emergency medical procedures, first aid, and CPR techniques  
  • Applicant must pass all phases of the hiring and selection process as outlined in department policy 401A before being offered the position of police officer
  • Commissioned service as a peace officer and certifications to be considered is reflected in the TCOLE Data Distribution System, TCLEEDS
  • Must successfully complete a minimum 12-month evaluation period immediately following field training
  • This position is classified as security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code

Equipment
Proficient with all equipment utilized to perform assigned duties, including but not limited to firearms, restraints, less-lethal force weapons and techniques, automobiles, communications equipment, personal computers, and investigative and surveillance equipment.

Physical Capabilities
Duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above the head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding, good physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak.
