Smithers is seeking applicants for a full-time Chemist II role at our Wareham, MA location.
This position calls for proven expertise in the technical and experimental conduct of Environmental Fate and Metabolism studies. The Chemist II is expected to be proficient with standard and complex laboratory procedures, instrumentation and method development, and function as a lead in the implementation of solutions to common issues. The Chemist II is expected to and have significant experience with most types of study design/methodologies and have an excellent understanding of GLP requirements and their application for all Environmental Fate and Metabolism processes.
Job Summary

The Chemist II is expected to be proficient with standard and complex laboratory procedures, instrumentation and method development, and function as a lead in the implementation of solutions to common issues. The Chemist II is expected to and have significant experience with most types of study design/methodologies and have an excellent understanding of GLP requirements and their application for all Environmental Fate and Metabolism processes. The Chemist II has the ability to act as an independent Study Director for multiple types of SMV studies and is familiar with standard regulatory requirements for Environmental Fate. The position may have study director responsibilities for a wide range of studies, performing administrative and client-facing functions. Individual may be responsible for direct supervision of a limited number of laboratory technical staff, including their career development, technical training and scheduling. The individual must possess proven management and training/coaching skills and be able to maintain efficient communication and work processes within and across teams as well as implement management directives in a fast and efficient manner.
Job Duties
- Completion of standard procedures requiring precision and accuracy in support of laboratory operations and projects, as outlined in the department’s skill matrix for this job level
- Proficient in managing documentation per GLP requirements and facility SOPs.
- Proficient in working with and training technical staff on the operation of all relevant standard laboratory equipment, handling samples used in the laboratory, handling test compounds (including 14C-labeled materials), reference analytical substances, solvents, detergents, acids, bases, resins, silicone and activated carbon.
- Proficient in performing and training staff for calculations of stocks and dosing solutions. Advanced mathematical reasoning and chemistry skills are assumed for this position.
- Proficient in performing and training technical staff on data handling, calculation and scientific interpretation of results.
- Performs complex scientific and administrative functions as required for an independent study director which includes writing technical documents (protocols, data summaries, reports), client communication, coordination of technical procedures on assigned studies, troubleshooting of instruments, etc. Can perform assisted as well as independent study set-up, sampling and analysis of the data.
- Proficient in HPLC-RAM method development and troubleshooting.
- Proficient in data compilation and data analysis.
- May validate and develop new testing methodologies.
- May be responsible for the direct supervision of a limited number of laboratory technical staff, including their career development, technical training and scheduling.
- The individual must possess proven management and training/coaching skills and be able to maintain efficient communication and work processes within and across teams as well as implement management directives in a fast and efficient manner.
- Proven proficiency in working with management to align business goals with department processes.
- Understanding of basic business metrics and their application, as assigned.
- Able to perform routine laboratory cleanliness, including routine clean-up and glassware washing.
- May oversee or coordinate various laboratory support functions such as ordering chemicals and supplies or disposing samples, laboratory organization etc.

Chemical Safety
- Must be able to comprehend the potential hazards of the chemicals in use and adhere to the proper safety techniques as dictated by the Safety Manual and/or Management.

- Must be able to wear gloves, lab coat, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suit, plastic booties, dust masks, a respirator and a face mask.
- Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards.
Job Specifications
B.S. degree in chemistry or related field and at least 5 years of relevant laboratory experience preferred. In lieu of a degree at least 10 years of relevant laboratory experience preferred. Proficient in documentation and procedures required by Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations and SSL Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Proficient in using equipment and/or equipment as specified by supervisor.
