Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions\:
I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.*
*Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements\: Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License may be required.

System Requirements
The Massachusetts State Police Academy is seeking a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Refrigeration Mechanic II. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining all boilers, roof top units, heating and cooling systems, exhaust fans, coolers and related equipment. The Massachusetts State Police Academy is a 250,000+ square foot facility. It is in operation twenty -four hours a day, seven days a week.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Installs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures such as air and water filters and piping using refrigeration, pipe fitting and structural layout techniques, blueprints, appropriate machines, tools and work aids to join tubing or pipes; to cut and thread pipes; solder or braze joints; to mount compressor and condenser units; and to connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, pumps, zone valves, and circulating ventilation fans to electrical power sources.
- Monitors building management systems, checks alarms, room temperature, humidity and CO2 readings. Adjusts setpoints and schedules as needed.
- Checks equipment for malfunctioning by observing building managements system, pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators; by adjusting controls.
- Maintains, rebuilds and repairs by replacing worn or defective parts such as switches, fuses, thermostats and electrical wiring, by pumping specified gas or fluids into systems; by adding necessary liquids; by lubricating motors and bearings and by changing filters and belts.
- Performs related work such as drilling holes for mounting brackets; screwing, boring, riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches and gauges; and installing shells and cabinets in systems.
- Participates in an on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies.
- Participates in snow removal operations.
- Participates in Academy operations and functions such as graduation and orientation.
- Performs all other related duties as requested.
Preferred qualifications:
- Knowledge of the standard preventative maintenance procedures for heating, ventilation, refrigeration and related electrical systems.
- Knowledge of the methods for lubricating machinery and equipment.
- Knowledge of building management system software and use.
- Knowledge of the care and maintenance of small hand tools and power tools.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools such as pliers and screwdrivers.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems.
- Knowledge of the terminology, coding, symbols and standard abbreviations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems.
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of pipe threading.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems.
- Skill in the use of small hand tools and power tools.
- Skill in the use of electrical testing equipment.
- Skill in operating heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems.
- Knowledge of the use of electrical test equipment such as voltmeters, amprobes, etc.
- Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to assigned unit activities.
- Ability to interpret and read documents such as specifications, operation manuals and blueprints.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
