Job Introduction

 

BBC News, with a weekly global audience of 468 million, uses multiple platforms to deliver accurate, impartial news in 42 languages. As the biggest international service of BBC News, World Service is a renowned multimedia broadcaster, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences.  

 

BBC News Afghan Languages is a multimedia news service, providing international, regional and Afghanistan news in Dari, Pashto and Uzbek languages that is relevant to our audience on the platforms they prefer.  

 

We are looking for a Farsi Dari-speaking Digital Journalist.  

 

As the Digital Journalist, you will research, write and produce a range of text, video, audio and digital content for digital publication in Farsi Dari. You will also find contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of material. 

 

You may be required to present the content in audio, visual or both. This might be live or recorded. 

 

You must be social media savvy to discover, curate and produce original story ideas from digital platforms and later promote our content on social media.  

 

You will use data to drive traffic to digital platforms and to increase the impact of editorial output on social media.  

 

You will translate from English into Dari news reports, interviews and despatches. You might be required to translate into English news stories that might be appealing to other parts of the BBC News.  

 

You must be social media savvy to discover, curate and produce original story ideas from digital platforms and later promote our content on social media.  

 

You will be ready to work during weekends and do nightshifts whenever necessary.   

 

Main Responsibilities

 

  • To produce accurate, informed and interesting multimedia content, and to achieve high impact journalism across digital and social platforms, whenever necessary.  
  • To produce text, digital videos and live news events on social media.  
  • To write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to younger audiences and different forms of media. 
  • To liaise closely with other team members in BBC News Afghan Languages, Near East Hub Central Services and other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is adhered to. 
  • To actively play a role in driving traffic to our website and social media platforms, using a variety of analytical tools, and be able to apply the data to inform editorial decisions  
  • To ensure our content truly represents the diversity of our Dari-speaking audiences by finding and commissioning contributors in line with the BBC’s Diversity and Inclusion objectives and initiatives such as 50:50.  
  • To have excellent knowledge of international affairs, as well as strong understanding of and interest in a wide range of issues of interest to young audiences, particularly those in the target area. 
  • To help editors plan for big news events. 
  • To ensure that BBC Editorial values and guidelines and all relevant legal and copyright requirements are met, asking for the support of managers in cases of difficulty or doubt.  
  • To have a keen interest in new technologies and the fast-changing media market. 
  • To provide highlights of coverage as requested. 

 

Are you the right candidate?

 

  • Recent experience as a Dari digital journalist, with a good knowledge of news-gathering and production techniques. 
  • Track record in production of text and digital video appealing to social media users. 
  • Ability to write scripts and content for digital and social media as well as broadcast, and adapt with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to the differing audiences and platforms 
  • A clear understanding of World Service Languages and of the needs and profile of our target audiences across Afghanistan and its neighbours 
  • Proven knowledge of best practice in social listening, search and social optimisation including experience in effectively using analytics tools.

Salary: £27,300 - £37,300 per annum base salary depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience + London Weighting. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
