Estrella del Paso FILLABLE Application
Estrella del Paso is a full service immigration legal aid organization providing high quality free and low cost legal services to individuals in West Texas and New Mexico. The legal assistant will work with an assigned attorney to provide support to the attorney as they represent individuals seeking entry to the United States or facing removal from the United States.
Responsibilities include:
- Assist assigned attorney in conducting intakes of individuals seeking representation in removal proceedings
- Assist in the preparation and drafting of motions and other documents to be filed with the El Paso Immigration Court
- Communicate with clients on behalf of assigned attorney
- Visit detained clients as requested by the Attorney to assist in the representation of the client
- Open new files for individuals seeking representation from the Estrella del Paso Removal Defense Unit
- Gather documentation to support cases of the Removal Defense Unit
- Enter client data into LawLogix, case management software, and ensure the accuracy and completeness of the data
- File documentation in the appropriate client file
- File documentation with the El Paso Immigration Court, as needed
- Work with the other legal assistants in the Removal Defense Unit on unit-wide projects and needs
- Conduct and/or assistance in the preparation of Know Your Rights presentations in the community
- Participate in ongoing training relevant to the position and immigration law
- Participate in regular staff meetings with the rest of the team to discuss cases and program developments
- Represent Estrella del Paso at community events

Other administrative tasks as needed to ensure high quality representation of all Removal Defense clients

Other tasks as assigned by assigned Removal Defense Unit Staff Attorney or Management
Qualifications:
- Minimum one year experience as a legal assistant or paralegal
- Experience in immigration law preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Fluency in English and Spanish
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to public service, particularly to immigration issues
