JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Technologist performs phlebotomy and laboratory testing. Has knowledge of the clinical significance of results, monitors and understands operation of the instrumentation, and reports results accurately and rapidly. Responsible for following established organization and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines of the hospital. Supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Health.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
Education:
· Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field with certification from American Society of Clinical Pathologists, or equivalent certification, preferred
Qualifications:
· Must be detail oriented, able to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
· Must be able to plan and organize work.
· Must possess proficient computer skills.
· Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Establishes and maintains strong positive relationships with patients, other OSS employees and Medical staff.
· Performs all clinical testing as assigned. Records and reports test results accurately and promptly.
· Performs and interprets quality control testing following established guidelines.
· Maintains a high level of quality assurance. Reports all quality concerns according to policy.
· Coordinates and evaluates new reagents, procedures and equipment as requested by manager.
· Performs routine scheduled and specialized maintenance of laboratory equipment.
· Performs basic troubleshooting on laboratory analyzers.
· Manages an efficient workstation, keeps area clean and stocked with supplies.
· Maintains a safe environment following hospital policies and procedures.
· Utilizes appropriate safety and infection control practices.
· Maintains confidentiality regarding patients and all aspects of care.
· Participates in educational activities, unit meetings, and quality initiatives.
· Maintains skills as demonstrated through competency testing.
· Other duties as assigned.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, peers, physicians and the public. Ability to speak and understand English fluently.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate physical effort when working in patient care environment consisting of standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and stooping. Moderate sitting and keyboarding along with fine and gross motor skills and manual dexterity to operate keyboard and other equipment. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Climate controlled environment with occasional periods of being outside.
Exposed to blood borne pathogens, toxic chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, bio-contaminated waste, and unpleasant elements. Subject to stressful situations, long or irregular hours.
