About the Position
As our HR Director, you will play a crucial role in helping organizations thrive by supporting all aspects of the employee/employer relationship. From developing organizational culture initiatives and ensuring compliance, to supporting employees, creating policies, and providing training, your work will directly impact the success of our clients and the well-being of their teams. You must be able to service multiple client relationships and oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
The Human Resources Director/Head of HR makes a significant impact on our team and our business partners by providing leadership, expertise, accuracy, skill, and savviness. The HR Director must live out and lead a culture that embodies Missionwell’s core values. This position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and will liaise with the Senior Leadership Team.
Primary Responsibilities
Oversee daily operations of our HR Services team
- Lead and supervise HR and payroll teams.
- Motivate and inspire team members through effective leadership and coaching.
- Foster an environment of trust, open communication, creativity, and teamwork.
- Model professional standards and communication.
- Facilitate problem-solving and collaboration.
- Strive for consensus and healthy group dynamics, intervening when necessary.
- Review and support individual development plans; conduct performance reviews.

- Secure resources needed to support the team.
Ensure HR excellence with business partners
- Provide staffing solutions to business partners including recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding.
- Manage and advise on employee policy execution.
- Partner with managers on employee relations issues.
- Oversee payroll for 10-30 employees, depending on the client.
- Review and update employee handbooks and policies.
- Guide performance management procedures.
- Lead benefits selection and renewals and oversee benefits enrollments.
- Inform clients of new employment laws.
- Recommend best practices based on Missionwell HR.
- Advise strategically on organizational development and culture.
- Provide leadership coaching, and supervisor or employee training.
- Conduct HR assessments and HR investigations.
- Professionally interface with business partners (employees, volunteers, executives, boards of directors) and strategic Missionwell vendors and partners.
Oversee the HR function to Missionwell internally
- Work with the Senior Leadership Team on initiatives surrounding our People value and company culture, attend meetings, and assist in decision-making.
- Lead internal all-staff meetings.
- Advise and develop policies.
- Collaborate during strategy meetings and progress checks.
- Oversee leadership development and employee satisfaction, implementing teamwork best practices.
- Administer employee benefits.
- Develop staffing plans and compensation recommendations.
- Review internal payroll.
- Lead company-wide recruiting efforts, ensuring proper staffing across all our teams.
Manage client relationships
- Focus the team on business partner requirements and satisfaction and serve as the connection point for the team's business partners.
- Assure that the team addresses all relevant issues in accordance with Missionwell’s standards.
- Lead the team's strong performance in customer satisfaction surveys while ensuring profitability of contracts assigned to the HR team.
- Work with the CAO on matters concerning profitability, including monitoring hours incurred (internal to Missionwell HR, and business partner ongoing and consulting hours), pricing of services, new products and services, and expenses charged to business partners.
- Establish annual goals with business partners including, but not limited to, improved delivery of Missionwell services, more streamlined operations for the business partner, improved policies and procedures, or compliance.
- Keep leadership informed of task accomplishment, issues and status via metrics, project-management tools, status reports, meetings, and special communications as needed.
Other Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the team, under the direction of the CAO, to onboard new business partners by setting up their accounts (including setup as a Missionwell business partner, setup/evaluation of payroll/HRIS services and other providers), and integrating established operating procedures with Missionwell best practices, ensuring a smooth transition into Missionwell services with cross-department collaboration.
- Assess and improve the setup process through your knowledge and expertise including automating where possible.
- Assist business development with estimates of setup time and resources.
- Attend and participate in teaching at industry conferences as directed.
- Assist in developing helpful and actionable HR-related content for marketing purposes, including blogs, sales emails, and Missionwell’s website.
All Missionwell Staff are required to:
- Maintain accurate project action items with status updates in Missionwell’s project management tools; maintain accurate timekeeping.
- Keep informed of organizational announcements, activities, and changes via a regular reading of Missionwell’s communication tools and attendance at staff meetings.
- Maintain a professional development plan for yourself and present this to your supervisor for regular, quarterly review and support.
- Maintain a strict level of confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
- Attend and participate in staff and team meetings as requested.
- Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as requested or as assigned.
Qualifications
- 7-10 years prior experience in positions showing increasing and varied responsibilities in the areas of HR and payroll operations, including functions such as budgeting or staff planning, financial planning, benefits/insurance, payroll, policy development, training, strategic planning, dashboards/scorecards, or data manipulation
- Demonstrated success at team supervisory and/or project leadership roles.
- Strong project management skills; a self-starter able to plan and lead projects through to the end.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Management or Leadership degree preferred.
- Nonprofit HR experience and an understanding of religious organizations is a big plus!
- Superior problem-solving, planning and organization skills.
- Strong leadership and delegation abilities; able to build effective teams, coach, and develop others; interview experience preferred.
- Personal character: exhibit strong ethical values compatible with our business partners’ ethics.
- Ability to build relationships, rapport, and trust, requiring networking, influencing and delivery of on-time results.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels via verbal and written communication.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy of work.
- Ability to grasp Missionwell’s business partners’ short- and long-term priorities and develop systems, processes, and policies to support the achievement of them in a cost-effective manner.
- Effective prioritization and time management, focusing time and resources against key business priorities.
- Uses metrics and good business judgment to drive business results.
- Ability to function well in a high-paced environment with multiple concurrent deliverables deadlines.
- Must be quick to learn other web-based applications.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
The following abilities are required for the position:
- Work at a desk in an office or home-office setting; Sit at an office desk for extended periods of time.
- Work for extended periods of time at a computer, requiring the ability to send and receive information with necessary optical, auditory, and manual dexterity.
- Use a keyboard and mouse to enter, retrieve or transfer words or data information and/or move from screen to screen on the computer to view information.
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; comprehend and speak English.
- Display the reading skills necessary to proofread written material.
- Perform basic mathematical calculations.
