Overview






Volunteers at the Santa Ynez Chumash Museum & Cultural Center play a crucial role in the daily operations and success of the museum. They work closely with the Museum staff in various capacities. The current roles for volunteers include welcoming guests and providing them with relevant information about the exhibits, ensuring the exhibits are well-maintained and monitored, conducting comprehensive tours of the Museum, facilitating engaging activities for students, and providing support for public programs hosted by the Museum. No prior experience in museum work is necessary as training will be provided.









Responsibilities






  • Engage with Museum Guests: Volunteers are expected to interact with Museum guests in a friendly and informative manner. They should be able to share the Santa Ynez Chumash story effectively, answering any questions guests may have and enhancing their overall museum experience.
  • Attend Meetings and Trainings: Volunteers are required to attend quarterly meetings to stay updated on Museum activities and plans. They must also participate in necessary training sessions to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed for their roles.
  • Time Commitment: Volunteers should be able to contribute a minimum of 10 hours per month. This ensures that they can actively participate in and contribute to the Museum’s operations.
  • Maintain Knowledge of Chumash History and Culture: Volunteers should continuously learn about and maintain a solid understanding of Chumash history and culture. This knowledge is crucial in effectively communicating with guests and conducting tours.
  • Collaborate with Museum Staff: Volunteers should work in close collaboration with Museum staff, assisting in various tasks and contributing to the smooth running of the Museum.
  • Perform Other Duties as Assigned: Volunteers may be assigned additional tasks as needed. These tasks can vary based on the Museum’sneeds and the volunteer’s skills and interests.  








Qualifications






  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. This is a standard requirement for many volunteer positions and ensures that volunteers are legally adults and can take on responsibilities independently.
  • Organizational and Time-Management Skills: Volunteers should have strong organizational skills, which include the ability to keep track of tasks, manage their time effectively, and prioritize duties. This is crucial for ensuring smooth operations within the museum.
  • Excellent Verbal Communication Skills: Volunteers must have strong verbal communication skills as they will be interacting with museum guests, sharing information about exhibits, and possibly conducting tours. The ability to convey information clearly and effectively is key.
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills with Demonstrated Patience and Tact: Volunteers will be dealing with a diverse range of people, including guests of different ages, backgrounds, and temperaments. Therefore, having excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and tact is essential for creating a positive experience for all guests.
  • Attention to Detail: This is important for many tasks, such as monitoring exhibits, conducting tours, and facilitating student activities. Volunteers must be observant and meticulous to ensure that all details are taken care of.
  • Interest in Learning about Chumash History and Culture: As the museum focuses on the Santa Ynez Chumash community, volunteers should have a genuine interest in learning about Chumash history and culture. This will enable them to engage more deeply with their work and provide better service to guests.
  • Ability to Work as Part of a Team: Volunteers will be working closely with museum staff and other volunteers. Therefore, the ability to work well in a team, collaborate with others, and contribute to a positive working environment is crucial.
  • Native American Hiring Preference Applies: In line with policies aimed at promoting diversity and representation, preference is given to applicants of Native American descent.
