This position assists attorneys by performing legal and administrative work that supports the Office’s mission to seek justice, promote public safety by fairly and effectively prosecuting crimes, and represents the legal interest of the County.  This position completes work on civil matters, including civil commitment proceedings, planning and zoning proceedings, forfeiture, and other civil matters.  Responsibilities include preparing legal pleadings; organizing and preparing discovery; preparing correspondence; coordinating schedules for attorneys; and maintaining file organization. Paralegals in the Nicollet County Attorney’s Office have opportunities to work on a variety of types of legal matters.


Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills


DUTY FREQUENCY BAND/GRADE
Performs independent legal work including:   drafting pleadings, correspondence, and statements; transcribes correspondence, distributes mails; general administrative support to County Attorney; maintain tracking of cases within the office. Daily
Maintains court calendar for district court; schedules appointments; tracks and advises attorneys, social workers, and law enforcement of approaching deadlines. Daily
Initiates contact with county employees, outside agencies, attorneys, and the public for purpose of gathering information to prepare cases for hearings/trial. Daily
Organizes and reviews files in anticipation of contested hearings and/or trial to assist the assigned attorney in the collection of documents and securing witnesses.  Prepares summary of file issues, evidence, exhibit, and witnesses for complex hearings/trials. Weekly
Reviews documents/evidence to determine necessary redaction; preparation of court orders. Weekly
Subpoena and notify interested parties for hearings/trial and advise them on criminal proceedings. Weekly
Performs receptionist duties on a rotating basis including answering phones and greeting individuals. Daily
Serves as a liaison for the County Attorney’s Office with the Technology Department including knowledge of computer/software abilities and office needs; implementation of County Attorney recordkeeping software and providing training and assistance regarding same; responsible for maintaining library material subscriptions and monitors costs; responsible for monitoring and updating phone system.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements


In order to be considered for this position, we require an associate’s degree in paralegal training or a related field and 3 years of legal experience. We will also consider candidates who have an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job.
