POLICE OFFICER


Salary Range: $26.7306 per hour to $31.0321 per hour (Depending on Experience)

The Historic City of Mount Rainier, MD is a residential community sitting on the border of Washington DC and Prince George’s County, MD. Serving 8,000 residents, the community is a small urban oasis of historic homes and unique shops.


The Mount Rainier Police Department has immediate openings for entry level to experienced (Maryland certified police officers at the rank of officer or police officer first class) or a person pending or able to be certified by comparative compliance* training from the Maryland Police Training Commission. Vacancies are open until filled.


*Candidates with two to three years as a Sworn Police Officer are preferred.


*Certified laterals and bilingual (English/Spanish) individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.

Candidates must have the ability to: make quick, independent decisions, handle simultaneous tasks under pressure. Specific duties required of the candidate include receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls.


Typical responsibilities include: responding to calls, maintaining order in an assigned patrol area, enforcing criminal and traffic laws mandated by the State and local laws and ordinances; report writing, courtroom presentation of cases, and providing excellent service to the residents of the City of Mount Rainier.

Qualifications:


The minimum candidate qualifications include must be a U.S. citizen, 21 years of age, have H.S. diploma/G.E.D., possess a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass a background check. The following is required: certification by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission.  A Criminal and personal history background required including truth verification test, credit report, criminal history and activity, driving record.


Compensation commensurate with experience and education.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a field environment in various weather conditions:


This position involves potential exposure to and requires the employee to function in the presence of:


All and extreme weather conditions.


All and extreme lighting conditions--daylight and night light, with and without artificial light available, indoors and outdoors.


Fire, smoke, chemical leaks/spills--in close proximity as necessary to provide emergency services.


Personal danger, including but not limited to:


               *        armed and/or dangerous persons/animals.


               *        persons and/or articles with contagious/communicable diseases.


               *        persons under the influence of drugs/alcohol, suffering from mental disorders or emotional distress.


               *        hazards associated with emergency driving, traffic control and working in and around traffic.


               *        hazards associated with natural and man-made disasters.


 


The incumbent in this position is considered an "Essential" employee and will be required to report for work during natural/manmade disasters, and during special operations as assigned. "Essential" employees are expected to report or remain at work when other City employees are granted administrative leave.


Bloodborne Pathogens:  


The duties of Police Officer include the handling of evidence which may contain a risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, contact with persons who may have contagious/communicable diseases and providing initial emergency responder first aid care to injured persons.
