The Town of Winter Park is recruiting a Police Sergeant to join the Fraser Winter Park Police Department. Reporting to the Police Commander, the Police Sergeant also serves as the Watch Commander and supervises all activities on a shift in addition to patrolling the Town of Winter Park and Fraser.
Minimum qualifications include Colorado Post Certification and Training Peace Officer certification along with five years of progressively responsible related experience. Job Description:
SUMMARY
This is law enforcement supervisory work ensuring the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances by police officers on an assigned watch and/or detectives in the Detective Unit. Work involves the monitoring of radio communications to ensure preventive patrol and call response operations are conducted in accordance with accepted standards of police operations and departmental policies and that officers have back up assistance available as needed. Work also involves a wide variety of administrative duties including making daily work assignments, determining that assigned personnel are available for duty and calling in replacements as authorized, holding daily roll call sessions, and holding training sessions on laws or procedure. At scenes of major crimes or accidents, incumbents assume command until relieved by a ranking officer. Incumbents serve as Watch Commanders and supervise all activities on a shift.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Supervises the work of police officers on an assigned watch or detectives in the Detective Unit; schedules officer duty assignments to ensure minimum staffing and appropriate beat coverage; monitors officers at work to ensure operations are conducted in accordance with departmental policies.

Responds to officer's request for supervisory assistance; conducts training concerning laws, procedures, etc., (all areas of police operations).

Reviews and evaluates employee performance; implements disciplinary action as needed.

Conducts patrol meetings, giving out assignments, memoranda, directives, crime information advisories, etc.; inspects officers, vehicles, and equipment to ensure proper maintenance and service ability of uniform, weapons, and equipment.

Patrols the Towns of Winter Park and Fraser to provide a visible deterrent in uniform and in marked cars and to enforce laws and ordinances and protect life and property; monitors commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity, patrols for suspicious persons or vehicles.

Enforces traffic and parking laws through the issuance of citations and warnings; routinely inspects roadways, bridges, and traffic signals and signs to find and report any hazardous conditions.

Performs business and residential security checks; checks building doors, windows, gates, and fences to ensure building/home is secured.

Reports buildings, homes, vehicles, or equipment that is not secured; ensures the safety and well‑being of all residents/employees on duty; learns employees work patterns and alerts them to possible suspects and crime prevention.

Responds to calls for assistance, disturbance calls, and complaints of crimes; enforces Federal, State, and local laws by performing warrant, felony, or misdemeanor arrests; implements physical confrontation when necessary; protects the civil rights of persons in custody.

Investigates traffic accidents by establishing point of impact, interviewing witnesses, and collecting, preserving, and packaging evidence; detects drunk drivers and performs sobriety evaluations; books DUI suspects.

Secures and protects crime scene by establishing boundaries, detaining victims, suspects, and witnesses, locating and identifying evidence, and briefing supervisors and investigators on their arrival.

Serves as first‑responder to provide aid and assistance to victims of traffic and other accidents, assists fire and emergency medical services in treating and transporting victims.

Prepares and maintains a wide variety of departmental records and reports in compliance with departmental and legal policies and procedures; prepares and files thorough written case reports.

Gives advice on laws, ordinances, and general information to the public; renders advice on domestic disturbances, assists citizens in need.

Maintains assigned uniform, vehicle, and equipment in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.

Presents evidence and testimony in courts of law; assists in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases.

Assists stranded motorists, directs traffic when necessary; escorts special processions; transports prisoners to jail.

Participates in departmental training programs.

Participates in community relation's projects as required.

Experience:

Five years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience. Time spent in a supervisory patrol position is recommended.
Certification:

Colorado POST Basic Certificate or the equivalent from another state.

GUIDELINES AND SCOPE
All federal, state, and local laws. Work requires discretion and judgment in interpreting Town policies, laws, and ordinances and analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards, and precedents. The purpose of this position is to enforce state laws and Town ordinances, perform law enforcement duties, and to assist the public and other officers during emergency and non-emergency situations.
