Job Description Summary
The Leinwand Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at George Washington University is looking for a Research Assistant/Technician to support research on the development and neurobiology of learning and memory. The candidate will devote approximately half of their time to specific research projects examining how behaviors like learning and memory change with age or how cells and circuits for learning and memory mature. The candidate may also explore the role of hormone signaling in brain and behavior maturation (related to the ongoing projects described in this link: https://leinwandlab.owlstown.net/pages/2065-research). The remaining time will be spent on general lab set-up, maintenance, and support. General lab support tasks may include purchasing, setting up new equipment and organizing supplies, maintaining the labβs fruit flies (Drosophila), fly genetic crosses, and training undergraduate researchers in the lab in fly husbandry. This is unique opportunity to become deeply involved in exciting research at the interface of neuroscience, cellular and molecular biology and genetics and is well-suited for a recent college or doctoral graduate. The interested candidate should have a minimum of a BA or BS in Neuroscience, Biology, or other relevant field and prior research laboratory experience. Previous experience rearing insects, study animal behavior, and/or carrying out molecular biology protocols or immunostaining is preferred. A demonstrated interest in neuroscience, genetics, developmental biology and/or animal behavior is also strongly preferred. It is essential that candidates be organized, detail-oriented, willing to troubleshoot, and enthusiastic about working with and communicating with others in a collaborative lab environment. Research on the development and function of neural circuits for learning and memory, including implementing and troubleshooting anatomical and behavioral experiments and data analysis using Drosophila melanogaster General lab set-up, maintenance, and support, including but not limited to purchasing, setting up new equipment and organizing supplies, drafting lab protocols, fly husbandry, and fly genetic crosses Scientific communication and assisting in training and mentoring undergraduate student researchers in the laboratory Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
BA or BS in Biology, Neuroscience, or other relevant field obtained or scheduled to be obtained prior to the start of the position Prior laboratory research experience (beyond lab classes), preferably in neuroscience, cellular or molecular biology, genetics and/or animal behavior Demonstrated interest in neuroscience, genetics, developmental biology and/or animal behavior Excellent organizational and communication skills
Work Schedule
