Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is looking for Dental Assistant Externs to work under the supervision of the Dental Clinic Coordinator.  The student intern provides support to the dental department as a student volunteer, is responsible for assisting team members to maintain an efficient Dental Department and will gain knowledge of community health care through exposure to the FHCSD community health model.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs volunteer duties as assigned, within scope of assignment, under direct supervision.
  • The dental assistant extern provides support to an assigned department as a volunteer while gaining knowledge of community health care.

Requirements:

  • Interest in FHCSD’s mission
  • Licensure may be required for specific volunteer assignments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Enrollment in an accredited school for dental assistant certification/degree.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients from diverse social, cultural and economic groups.
  • Ability to work well in both a team-based environment and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to be culturally sensitive and respect diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain good working relationships with employees, coworkers, and departments.
  • Intermediate interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Spanish/English/Arabic fluency desired, but not always required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
