Job Overview


The Specialist, Designer brings Macy's brand narratives to life across diverse topics, including style tips, sale events, and social purpose. Using customer insights and a keen curiosity about shopper motivations, the Designer creates engaging solutions that reflect Macy’s commitment to understanding customer needs.


Skilled in research and quick to grasp project requirements, the Designer shapes creative approaches through collaboration with copywriters, ensuring product features and benefits are clear and compelling. Mastery of Macy’s design systems and attention to detail allow the Designer to reinforce the brand with an inspiring, accessible style across digital, emerging, and traditional media. A conceptual thinker, the Specialist, Designer, values collaboration and embraces innovative ideas, thriving in the healthy debate that leads to impactful work.


The Designer works primarily with copywriters and design teams within Creative and Digital Experience, as well as Marketing, Project Management, and Photo Studio teams.


 


What You Will Do



  • Develop digital and print advertising, along with video content, that aligns with brand identity guidelines, incorporates design and fashion trends, and demonstrates a continuous awareness of the competitive landscape.

  • Review creative briefs to ensure clarity and alignment on direction before work begins.

  • Collaborate with copywriters and other creatives to develop campaign and project concepts that meet the objectives of creative briefs.

  • Conduct research with enthusiasm to bring fresh ideas to all solutions, from fashion and promotional innovations to digital content and experiences.

  • Use a strong understanding of design systems, grids, color, typography, and photography to create clear and impactful messages.

  • Create presentations that effectively convey and inspire support for new ideas.

  • Plan, prioritize, and produce a high volume of work, taking full ownership from start to finish.

  • Edit photography to best suit the context and represent the diversity of our customers.

  • Meet deadlines and proactively communicate project status to partners and leaders.

  • Inspire others with an innovative approach to design, ideation, and ways of working.

  • Contribute energy and enthusiasm to the team through participation in celebrations, peer mentoring, volunteering, and fundraising events.


 


Skills You Will Need


Creative Design and Visual Storytelling: Ability to translate brand narratives into visually engaging content across digital, print, and video mediums, with a portfolio demonstrating proficiency in design and advertising communications.


Brand and Customer Insight Application: Skilled in leveraging customer insights and motivations to create solutions that align with Macy’s brand identity and resonate with customers.


Technical Proficiency in Design Software: Advanced skills in Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). Familiarity with Motion and After Effects for animation work (preferred). Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Word) for cross-functional collaboration and presentations.


Research and Innovation: Enthusiastic researcher with the ability to bring fresh ideas to projects, staying current with fashion, design trends, and the competitive landscape.


Attention to Detail and Design Systems Mastery: Strong understanding of design systems, grids, color, typography, and photography to create cohesive and impactful visuals that align with Macy’s style.


Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communicator who works well with copywriters, design teams, and other stakeholders across Marketing, Project Management, and Photo Studio teams. Welcomes constructive feedback and applies learnings quickly.


Organizational and Project Management Skills: Strong ability to plan, prioritize, and handle a high volume of work independently, with attention to deadlines and proactive communication on project progress.


Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Able to work iteratively, solving design challenges quickly and independently while managing competing priorities.


Innovation and Team Engagement: Inspires others with a creative approach to ideation and supports a positive team environment by participating in peer mentoring, celebrations, and team-building events.

  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 1-3 years of experience in advertising or other relevant design discipline. 

  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.

  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
