Job Title: Designer - Welding

GENERAL FUNCTION:

 A welding designer at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding (BMS) utilizes their knowledge and experience to review, modify, and design welds to facilitate high-quality construction of modern ships for the United States Coast Guard, Navy, and other government and commercial customers. Utilizes the latest computer-aided design tools such as AutoCAD, Navisworks, and ShipConstructor. Gathers information, calculates and checks welding sizes, and adds welding callouts to production drawings. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, production, and planning groups to ensure a highly producible design.


TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities:

  • Calculate and check welding sizes for production drawings.
  • Add welding callouts to production drawings.
  • Coordinate with other sections when appropriate.
  • Ensure BMS Computer Automated Design (CAD) standards are followed.
  • Ensure work meets the requirements of applicable regulatory bodies and job specifications.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of shipyard welding practices.
  • Familiarity with regulatory body welding rules and practices.
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Understanding of shipyard build strategy practices.
  • Ability to read and understand scantlings.
  • Some knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.

 

DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience with ShipConstructor.
  • Experience with Navisworks.
  • Field welding experience.
  • Production experience.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • Completion of two years of college-level coursework equivalent to an AA degree in technology or equivalent field experience.
