Distinguishing Features of Work

As a Network Engineer for the City of Wichita, you'll be at the heart of planning, designing, and analyzing our data communications networks. You will have the opportunity to shape and implement both internal and external network solutions that directly impact the efficiency and security of our city's operations. Your role will involve leveraging your expertise in LAN/WAN systems to develop robust network architectures and provide expert technical support. With a blend of independence and collaboration, you’ll address complex networking challenges and contribute to high-impact projects that enhance connectivity and service delivery across the city. Days and Hours of Work: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

Examples of Work Performed

  • Performs the installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance of networked information systems. 
  • Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements. 
  • Handles technical issues and major incidents through hands-on troubleshooting. 
  • Supports, maintains and monitors internal and external networks. 
  • Implements and manages network configurations and related security. 
  • Resolves network performance issues and establishes a disaster recovery plan. Installs upgrades and patches. 
  • Performs system backups and recovery. Monitors system configuration and maintains data files. 
  • Recommends upgrades, new applications, and equipment. 
  • Provides technical support and guidance to users. 
  • Relies on limited knowledge and professional discretion to achieve goals. 
  • Works under general supervision though some ingenuity and flexibility is required. 
  • Should be familiar with scripting languages such as Ruby and Python. 

Requirements of Work

  • Thorough knowledge of LAN/WAN data and voice transmission methods and means
  • Considerable knowledge of large scale network hardware, software, LAN/WAN technologies, virtualization and wireless data communications
  • Ability to gather proper data for analysis for problem resolution
  • Ability to analyze documents, files and reports related to work flow
  • Ability to quickly and effectively communicate with vendors and non-technical staff
  • Ability to identify and incorporate technology that provides value towards attaining organizational goals
  • Thorough knowledge of project management to plan, evaluate and implement projects across departmental lines
  • Ability to develop return on investment calculations for technology investments
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to provide lower level staff or subordinates with effective training and growth opportunities
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

Required Experience and Training

  • High School Diploma
  • 3 years of professional experience in information technology, with a strong focus on networking, access control systems, video camera systems, network configuration and troubleshooting.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
Preferred Experience and Training

  • Two or four years of college or technical trade school education in Management Information System, Computer Science, or Networking.
 
Offers of employment will be made contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which will include drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a police records check. 

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
