Job Description:
Job Duties include:
1. Assigns and supervises work activities and monitors schedules of assigned employees to ensure completion of assignments and to balance workloads and leave schedules.
2. Trains, guides and counsels assigned employees to develop their performance capacities and ensure consistent application of policies, procedures and standards.
3. Develops and applies employee selection and performance management criteria.
4. Recommends personnel actions to improve performance deficiencies and/or deal with inappropriate behaviors/actions.
5. Investigates facts and law of case to determine causes of action and case preparation including but not limited to interviews of witnesses, or taking sworn statements, gathering of information or documents.
6. Develops and maintains documents.
7. Maintains and manages document systems for cases and claims.
8. Drafts interrogatories, requests for admissions or production and discovery documents or answers thereto.
9. Writes legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, appeals and contracts, for review, approval, and use by an attorney.
10. Summarizes depositions and transcripts of hearings in preparation for discovery, hearings, or appeals.
11. Delivers or directs delivery of subpoenas to witnesses and parties of action.
12. Coordinates activities of legal staff and employees.
13. Writes basic research and shepardization of authority and prepares memoranda summarizing findings.
14. Serves as a bailiff for formal matters before Hearing Officers and for Department Regulation Hearings.
15. Serves as law librarian, keeping and monitoring legal volumes and ensuring legal volumes are up-to-date.
16. Review and file prepared probate and bankruptcy claims on behalf of the Nebraska Department of Revenue
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program at an accredited college or successful completion of a program at an ABA approved paralegal institute. Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications: 3 to 5 years of recent experience as a paralegal; experience supervising and directing the work of others; experience drafting pleadings, motions, settlement agreements and correspondence and using research sites such as Westlaw; experience with administrative procedures.
