SUBSTITUTIONS: Our ideal candidate will have a Certificate or degree in paralegal/legal assistant training. However, we will accept a High School diploma or GED and seven (7) years of practical paralegal experience in a law firm or health care setting.

A Brief Overview
Assists in the management of Hospital Professional Liability (HPL) and General Liability (GL) litigation. Assumes responsibility for handling litigation from inception to resolution. Provides essential support by managing and organizing case files, conducting legal research, drafting documents, and coordinating with associates, and experts. Maintains related systems to support these functions.Maintains strong understanding of legal liability and personal-injury litigation, excellent organizational skills, and an eye for detail.Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do

  • Evaluates and determines potential liability and proceeds with resolution of meritorious claims.
  • Works with attorneys on initial investigations and follow-up investigation of events,which may include meetings with staff, requesting and reviewing medical records, obtaining release from patient for access to medical records from outside facilities if necessary.
  • Assists in managing litigation from inception through resolution, including organizing and maintaining case files, tracking deadlines, and preparing case summaries.
  • Serves as liaison between associates, witnesses, and experts. Schedules meetings, gather information and provide updates on case progress.
  • Drafts and reviews legal documents such as pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and settlement agreements. Ensures all documents are accurate and comply with legal standards.
  • Conducts research on legal precedents, case law, statutes, and regulations relevant to liability. Summarizes findings and provide recommendations to attorneys.
  • Assists with the discovery process, including preparing and responding to interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and depositions.
  • Prepares and files documents with the court, ensuring compliance with court rules and procedures. Monitors case filings and deadlines.
  • Assists in trial preparation by organizing exhibits, preparing trial notebooks, and coordinating with witnesses and experts.
  • Performs general administrative duties such as managing calendars, scheduling appointments, and handling correspondence.


Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Technical Degree or Diploma Paralegal Studies
  • Bachelor's Degree Risk Management

Experience Qualifications

  • 3-5 years HPL/GL claims and litigation management of high exposure claims

Skills and Abilities

  • Skill and proficiency developed as a formal paralegal.
  • Familiarity with legal documents and understanding of the legal process with civil lawsuits.
  • Navigate litigation, understanding court filing process, obtaining documents from courts.
  • Obtaining documents from third parties through discovery, subpoena, and related means.
  • Understanding legal liability with a focus in personal injury litigation.
  • Support, management, and direction of outside counsel litigating civil lawsuits.
  • Skill and proficiency in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill and proficiency in proofreading letters and documents.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively with all level personnel with tact, diplomacy and good judgement.
  • Proficient and skilled in computer technology and Microsoft Office.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and act with good judgement in various kinds of situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of various information, including patient medical records and legal documents.

  • There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.

Physical Demands

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
