General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to patrol assigned areas of the City and respond to calls for service; enforce all federal and state laws and City ordinances relating to public safety and welfare. Responsible for performing routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the City, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, investigating criminal incidents, apprehending and arresting suspects and violent persons, securing crime scenes, issuing traffic citations/summonses, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, maintaining public order, interrogating suspects and transporting prisoners. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by courses in criminal justice, sociology or a related field, and some experience in work providing familiarity with basic law enforcement functions. Active involvement in community, civic, or youth activities helpful.
Requires six months in law enforcement or closely related experience.
The equivalent combination of education, training and related work experience may be considered.
The minimum age requirement is 21.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Law Enforcement Certifications
- Continuing Law Enforcement Training Requirements
- Valid South Carolina Driver’s License
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action.
- Ability to complete the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy’s Physical Ability Test (PAT).
- Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to develop skill in the use and care of firearms.
- Ability to write and speak effectively.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Enforces all federal and state laws and City ordinances relating to public safety and welfare; performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.
- Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the City, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, investigating criminal incidents, apprehending and arresting suspects and violent persons, securing crime scenes, issuing traffic citations/summonses, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, maintaining public order, interrogating suspects, transporting prisoners, etc.
- Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers.
- Assists with criminal investigations; interviews witnesses, complainants and victims; gathers physical evidence and preserves it for court; provides case follow-up as needed.
- Investigates and reports accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions.
- Prepares incident reports; enters data into computer.
- Attends community meetings; attends in-service and advanced training; trains subordinate officers.
- Performs related work as assigned.
