Department Overview

The Regenerative Engineering and Rehabilitation lab of Dr. Karina Nakayama, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is recruiting a talented research assistant to join our team. The RA2 will participate in translational studies to evaluate tissue engineered therapies and regenerative materials in small animal injury and exercise models to achieve the goal of musculoskeletal functional recovery. Specifically, they will perform and assist with animal studies, fabricate biomaterials, perform in vitro assays and cell culture, imaging, as well as help with the daily functions of the lab. This position will involve working on collaborative team projects composed of engineers, biologists and clinician scientists.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Research
    • Conduct experiments using in vitro assays and small animal models including: animal injury and exercise models, cell and tissue culture, molecular biology and protein assays, histology, fluorescence microscopy, and image processing.
  • Data Analysis & Recording

    • Generate data and perform quantitative analysis using the above techniques/protocols
    • Maintain detailed records of all experimental procedures, data collection and analysis using best practices.
    • Give oral presentations of research findings at group meetings and assist in the write up of results for publication.

    • Use computer software to input and manage data for analysis.Β 

  • Lab Function
    • Assist with the daily functions of the laboratory including monitoring and purchasing laboratory supplies and communicating with external personnel including vendors and severing as a point of contact for equipment and services.
    • Assist with lab-wide compliance with all safety regulations and create clear and detailed SOPs to support laboratory operations.
    • Serve as a strong individual contributor and also participate as a collaborative team member.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR
  • Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR
  • 4 years of relevant experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Prior experience working in a translational research settting.
  • Hands-on wet lab research experience with in vitro assays and cell culture.
  • Knowledge of animal models.
  • Knowledge of immunofluorescent staining and microscopy techniques.
  • Ability to multi-task and adjust/adapt to project developments; prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects; organize and execute a variable workload.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree or equivalent experience in life sciences, medical sciences, bioengineering, or related field.
  • Prior training in animal models, biomaterials, cell culture, and/or molecular biology.
  • Experience working with animal models.

  • Experience in chemistry and/or material synthesis.
