Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist I to work within the Wadsworth Center’s Laboratory of Viral Diseases. The incumbent will perform molecular testing and whole genome sequencing on circulating and emerging human viral pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Testing will include analysis of both human and wastewater samples. Additional duties will include test result importation into LIMS, data analysis, sequence annotation and curation, and sequence uploads to multiple public databases. The Research Scientist I will also contribute, as needed, with viral culture in both BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories, as well as the general laboratory for emergency preparedness and outbreak support.
As a member of the largest state public health Virology laboratory team in the U.S., the Research Scientist I will participate in the detection and characterization of multiple viral pathogens of major public health interest, development of future techniques, as well as contribute to the largest state wastewater surveillance program in the country.
This position will be part of a dynamic research and development team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health!
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology, and two years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and one year of research experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a biological/biomedical science. At least two years of experience performing molecular methods, including at least one year handling infectious agents. Experience working in a molecular biology laboratory performing and validating real-time or digital PCR assays. Experience working with collaborators. Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office software, including database management. Experience with cell or viral culture systems.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may be available on a very limited basis.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including but not limited to a laboratory coat, gloves and eye protection, as applicable.
