Senior Accountant/Assistant to the Comptroller

SUMMARY:

The LIUNA National Pension & Retirement Fund o?ce is seeking a Senior Accountant/Assistant to the Comptroller to support and oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial operations for the 5 Benefits Funds administered at the National Fund O?ce in Washington, D.C. This position reports directly to the Comptroller and Manager of Investment Operations. The ideal candidate has a deep knowledge of accounting principles and standards, is focused and detail-oriented, and operates at the highest level of professionalism and ethical standards.

Salary Level: $75,000 - $110,000 (annually)

Location: Washington, DC (in-person)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Closely monitor the Funds' various bank accounts to track daily cash flows
  • Lead the accounts payable process, collaborating with other members of the accounting team and ultimately submitting electronic payments through the online banking portal
  • Enter daily internal wire transfers for employer contributions
  • Manage the FundsοΏ½ state withholding tax accounts by paying and filing returns under strict deadlines that di?er between states
  • Record ad-hoc journal entries, which are used to complete account reconciliations, annual audits, and financial statements
  • Utilize Excel spreadsheets to balance monthly changes to pensioners' benefits, ensuring the monthly pension checks and direct deposit files are accurate
  • Perform the monthly internal accounting for the 401(k) plan as well as the Canadian pension plans, which involves downloading reports and recording journal entries
  • Prepare annual invoice mailings and audit requests
  • Assist with numerous investment related tasks, including paying manager fees, drafting capital calls, saving performance statements, and coordinating Form 5500 requests with investment managers
  • Communicate e?ectively, functioning as a key point of contact between the accounting department and management
  • Other duties may be assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP/IFRS accounting principles
  • Good quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, with proficiency in Excel and various industry accounting software applications
  • Ability to communicate e?ectively
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational ability
  • Ability to operate consistently with high level of professionalism and ethical standards is a must
  • Experience with unions or in a nonprofit organization or trade association is preferred

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business-related field
  • 5+ years of senior level accounting experience
  • Experience managing payroll lifecycle is a plus
  • Tax withholding and remittance experience (State and Federal) is preferred
