The University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College is seeking a Staff Accountant in the Business/Finance Office. This full-time administrative position is offered with a comprehensive benefit package including health insurance, retirement, life and disability insurance, paid leave, educational benefits, and all other benefits associated with a full-time employment. Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the University Controller, the Staff Accountant is responsible for gathering, compiling, and entering financial data into the accounting system. The Staff Accountant also supports the Controller in various general accounting responsibilities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with financial policies.
Essential Duties:
- Journal Entries & Data Compilation: Compile financial information and prepare monthly journal entries using billing service reports and bank statements.
- Daily Imports & Processing: Handle the daily import and processing of financial data from payroll and student information systems into the finance system, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Bank Reconciliations: Review and reconcile all bank accounts to the general ledger, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Endowed Scholarship Reporting: Compile and reconcile Endowed Scholarship Reports to ensure proper fund allocation and compliance.
- Endowment Expense Reporting: Compile, reconcile, and generate monthly reports for endowment expenses.
- Daily Posting Review: Review daily posting reports to ensure the accurate deposit of all payments.
- Cash Flow Reporting: Compile information for cash flow projections and compare with actual expenses.
- Fixed Assets Management: Compile information for fixed assets, record and reconcile additions and disposals to Accounts Payable (AP) or the General Ledger.
- Vendor Records & 1099 Processing: Maintain vendor records and assist with filing annual 1099 forms.
- Budget Transfers: Process and record budget transfers between accounts, ensuring compliance with financial policies and budgetary controls.
- Additional Reporting: Perform other duties to assist the Controller with financial reporting and analysis as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of modern office procedures and methods including record keeping and filing systems.
- Knowledge of modern business communications, including style and format of letters, memoranda, reports, and documents.
- Knowledge of basic accounting procedures and policies.
- Knowledge of personal computers and associated software.
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
- Ability to write clearly or otherwise communicate with technical accuracy.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives without supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers’ constituents, and public.
- Ability to handle and resolve recurring problems.
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field, 3 to 5 years of related experience (or combination of education and experience); basic knowledge of accounting principles and methods; strong knowledge and experience with computer and software applications (including Microsoft Office); and excellent oral and written communication skills required. Candidates must be willing to participate in special training programs and classes (as required) and demonstrate an ability to work with a diverse population, establish priorities, and work independently in a fast-paced office environment.
