Purpose  

Functions: 

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.  
  • Job functions include but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and modify scantling drawings.
  • Perform detailed design/drafting of marine craft structures, plans, and outfitting for new shipbuilding and repair/conversion.
  • 2D structural design with AutoCAD.
  • 3D structural modeling with FORAN or Ship Constructor.
  • Prepare assembly drawings, profile plots, and nests.
  • Extracting views from the 3D model and preparing 2D drawings from those.
  • Preparing change documents for various changes driven by program, production, client, or engineering. 
  • Providing solutions to complex structural and shipbuilding problems that arise daily in production, working in conjunction with other members of the team.
  • Work closely with the specific supervisor to work efficiently towards meeting the schedule.
  • Act as a mentor to designers I and II.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This is not a supervisory position.
  • May have team leadership responsibilities over employees.  Will have mentorship responsibilities over junior employees. 

Reporting Relationship

      This position will report to Structure Design Group Manager



Requirements

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:

  • An associate degree in drafting, engineering technology, or similar fields of study is preferred but not required.
  • 5-10 years of experience in a ship-design/shipbuilding environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office application, AutoCAD, and adobe pdf.
  • Experienced in ship structural design and drawings.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software and learning new software as necessary.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Experience with ABS/USCG rules is highly desired but not required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Citizenship:  U.S. Citizenship or a Permanent Resident Card is required.

Working Conditions

This position is considered OFFICE WORK which is characterized as follows. 

  • Almost exclusively indoors during the day and occasionally at night
  • Occasional exposure to airborne dust in the workplace
  • Work surface is stable (flat)
  • Some yard visits may render a high noise level environment and may require climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.
