Description

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Provides assistance in the delivery of the organization's programs and services by recruiting and managing volunteers, growing the organization’s volunteer program, and providing guidance, support, and resources to staff who supervise volunteers. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Marketing Director.


TYPICAL TASKS

Assess the volunteer program

  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for the volunteer program that reflect the mission and strategic direction of the organization
  • Evaluate organizational needs and match volunteers with meaningful opportunities
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of the programs and services delivered by volunteers and implement improvements as necessary

Organize the volunteer program

  • Develop, administer, and review policies and procedures that guide the volunteer programs and services, and reflect the overall values of the organization
  • Write the volunteer position descriptions in consultation with staff
  • Administrate the volunteer software and maintain accurate records for volunteer engagement and reporting

Engage volunteers

  • Promote the volunteer program to gain community support and engagement
  • Remain up to date on strategies to recruit the right volunteers with the right skills
  • Implement an interview protocol for potential volunteers to ensure the best match between the skills, qualification, and interests of the volunteers and the needs of the organization
  • Research and maintain a screening process for potential volunteers according to accepted screening standards and practices

Lead the volunteer program

  • Inspire the organization on the value of effective volunteer engagement and the potential impact on the community
  • Empower staff to work effectively with volunteers
  • Orient volunteers to increase their understanding of the organization, its clients, its services, and the role and responsibilities of volunteers
  • Ensure that volunteers are given appropriate training to be successful in their positions
  • Train staff to record volunteer hours and update volunteer database according to established procedures
  • Assist with conflict resolution among customers, supervisors, and volunteers
  • Ensure the implementation of an organization-wide plan for formal and informal volunteer recognition activities to apppreciate the volunteers’ service

Audit the volunteer program/service

  • Evaluate the risks associated with each volunteer position and take appropriate action to control the risks associated with the program or service
  • Report on the contributions of the volunteer program to the organization and progress of strategic goals annually

Support the efforts of the marketing department

  • Attend outreach events as a representative of the agency as needed
  • Provide assistance with agency fundraising events and special events
  • Perform tasks to support the goals and activities of the marketing department as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Self-motivated with creative problem-solving ability

· Excellent interpersonal skills

· Flexible, resourceful, and organized

· Knowledgeable of current trends, resources, and information related to volunteerism

· A team player who works cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness

· Effective written and verbal communication

· Proficient in use of Microsoft Office and familiar with constituent management software (CMS)

· Able to work well independently or on a team in a fast-paced environment

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three (3) years of experience working involunteerism, recruitment, placement, or a comparable role; with one (1) year in a leadership role required
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License required
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
