Position Summary

ION is looking for a full-time, highly detail-oriented, and dedicated Senior Accountant to join our expanding organization. This role requires exceptional accuracy, professionalism, and discretion. Reporting directly to the Controller and based in our Houston, Texas office, the Senior Accountant will maintain financial records, process daily transactions, manage month-end close procedures, ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, contractual obligations, and company policies, and prepare variance and trend analyses to assist with financial statement preparation as needed.  

The ideal candidate is a self-driven accounting professional with solid technical expertise, keen attention to detail, and the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights. A quick learner who readily identifies areas for improvement, they will implement effective solutions and demonstrate a long-term commitment to the company’s continuous growth and success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Records and Analysis: Maintain financial records by handling daily accounting tasks, such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and expense allocations. Perform reconciliations of general ledger accounts, prepare bank statements, and oversee routine procedures like fixed assets, leases, and prepaid expenses. Conduct variance and trend analysis to support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closings. Work closely with team members to resolve discrepancies, support financial reporting requirements, and assist with audits requests.
  • Working Capital Management: Oversee the company’s cash flow, monitoring income and expenditures, and effectively managing cash receipts and disbursements to optimize financial performance, working capital and strategic investments. Manage the processes for accounts payable and accounts receivable, including invoice creation, payment processing, and overdue account management.
  • Invoicing: Preparing accurate invoices to commercial customers and the Department of Energy (DOE) in a timely manner, tracking payments, and addressing any billing inquiries.
  • Disbursements: Reviewing the accuracy of invoices and other cash disbursements in comparison to purchase orders and contractual obligations, recording disbursements in the general ledger and maintaining all supporting documentation within the accounting system.
  • Policy and Compliance: Support the development documentation, and maintenance of the accounting policies and procedures that align with regulatory standards (e.g., GAAP, IRC) and meet organizational needs. Ensure policies are designed for ease of adoption, practical implementation, and long-term sustainability, supporting compliance and consistency across all accounting functions.
  • Financial Process Enhancement: Continuously assess and improve financial processes, internal controls, and procedures to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency. Implement best practices to streamline workflows and drive operational excellence.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Affairs: At the direction of the Controller, ensure compliance with all relevant financial and DOE regulations and US GAAP. Support the DOE and traditional financial audits and lead the preparation of necessary documentation and schedules. Assist with periodic reporting to taxing and regulatory authorities, including completion of business licenses, and 1099s.
  • Business Collaboration: Partner with project managers and corporate managers in developing operational metrics that enable informed decision-making.
  • Ad Hoc Tasks: Undertake additional duties as needed.


 Qualifications, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent education and experience), with a CPA, CMA, or similar designation preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally spanning both public accounting and private industry
  • Thorough understanding of U.S. GAAP and other relevant accounting principles, along with familiarity in financial reporting, analysis, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Strong regulatory compliance knowledge (DOE grant experience is a plus) and prior involvement in external audits
  • Proficiency in NetSuite is required; experience with QuickBooks, Zip and Concur is a plus
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and familiarity with MS365 tools such as Loop, Teams, and Planner
  • Highly analytical, detail-oriented, and adept at problem-solving, with the agility to learn quickly and identify areas for improvement
  • Entrepreneurial mindset suited to a growth-oriented business, balancing multiple responsibilities, deadlines, and expectations in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and organizational skills, capable of delivering clear financial insights to non-financial personnel while maintaining a results-oriented approach
     
     

Position Type/Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time position working standard business hours. This position may require the flexibility to work diverse schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. 
  • This position will require some domestic travel (mostly to ION headquarters in Boulder, Colorado). Flexibility in work schedules is offered at manager’s discretion after demonstrated results in the role.
  • This position is for the Houston, TX location. The employee is required to be primarily in the office with some remote work allowable with prior approval. The work environment and physical demand characteristics are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The successful candidate will perform primarily sedentary office duties with occasional travel to other offices or development& construction sites. They may occasionally lift up to 10 pounds and may be required to sit, stand, walk, and use a computer.
