Job Description:

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Accountant performs professional accounting work of a complex nature. They thoroughly understand institutional, University System of Maryland, state and federal policies, procedures and restrictions as related to Public Higher Education. The Senior Accountant ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles in executing, analyzing, verifying and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature. The Senior Accountant may also serve as a project leader on special projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary accountant for Fixed Asset accounting to include accounting for capital asset additions, adjustments, disposals and depreciation expense.
  • Perform annual fixed asset physical inventory counts and report results to management.
  • Prepare recurring daily, monthly, quarterly, and year-end journal entries for posting.  Research, identifies, and posts interagency revenue transactions received via R*Stars.
  • Perform activities to assist the Controller and Assistant Controller with month-end and year-end closing processes and schedules, journal entries, financial statement preparation and other reports as needed.
  • Cross train with other accountants in the department to obtain the necessary skills to step in and support the department when needed (e.g. during absences).
  • Provide a consistent level of customer service relating to inquiries in regard to financial transactions to management and the University Community.
  • Perform additional duties as identified and required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from accredited College or University.
  • Advanced degree a plus
  • Three years of Higher Education, State Government or Non-profit accounting or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in Fixed Asset Management and General Ledger accounting to include account reconciliations and resolving differences.
  • Audit experience a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to apply analytical techniques and skills to daily work.
  • Ability to meet specified due dates and timelines.
  • Ability to operate office equipment to include calculators, personal computers and related software.
  • Ability to exercise attention to detail; review and interpret items within an accounting system.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all staff and management levels, prepare written records and reports, and work independently with little supervision.
  • Must have the ability to understand and adhere to various privacy laws, University and USM policies and procedures and audit requirements that govern fiscal processes.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills including knowledge and proficiency using Microsoft Excel.
  • Professional attitude and good interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with robust Financial Accounting Software with ability to quickly learn new software.
  • Working knowledge of Workday Financials is a plus.
